September 2022,
PCaSO, Care for Veterans and Worthing Lions worked together to provide a PSA test to 662 men who attended the testing event at the Care for Veterans' Gifford House, this is the most tests carried out in one day by PCaSO.
The 3 charities worked together to provide this PSA testing for the local community helping the NHS to save lives.
BBC News South attended and had a report in the evening news, as its first news story.
Many thanks to Morrisons in Worthing who helped us provide the lunches for those who worked at the event on the day.
PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is NOT a direct test for cancer, a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Some leading clinicians believe all men over 50 should know their PSA and have regular yearly tests. Swedish researchers say PSA testing every man aged 45-49 would predict nearly half of all prostate cancer deaths.
Worthing Lions has worked with PCaSO since 2014, when 200 men where tested, to provide facilities and support to the team of phlebotomists.
If you want a test, we run this event annually, you can also contact your GP or check with PCaSO when their next testing events are.
